Join Curator Dr. Michael Chagnon for a journey exploring the interconnected world of the medieval era and the powerful role of western Africa within it. This illustrated lecture will pair close examinations of masterworks from the exhibition Caravans of Gold with evocative descriptions of African kingdoms collected from Arabic-speaking travellers and scholars of the medieval era.

Dr. Michael Chagnon joined the Aga Khan Museum as Curator in May 2019. A specialist of painting and the arts of the book of the early modern Persianate sphere, he has held curatorial positions at Japan Society (New York), LACMA, and the Brooklyn Museum. Dr. Chagnon’s substantial teaching experience most recently includes a graduate seminar on critical approaches to Persianate painting at Columbia University, New York. He received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, in 2015.
