From Pakistan to Andalusia, musical traditions have crossed paths, met, nourished one another, and blended so thoroughly that between the volcanic power and virtuosity of qawwali singing and the hypnotic lyricism of flamenco, distances fade and similarities naturally emerge.
Qawwali Flamenco marks the long-awaited return of the celebrated collaboration between Pakistani qawwali master Faiz Ali Faiz and flamenco guitar virtuoso Juan Gómez “Chicuelo.” Following their acclaimed first collaboration a decade ago, Faiz and Gómez reunite to deepen a remarkable artistic dialogue. The first chapter of their Qawwali Flamenco journey explored the relationship between human beings and their beloved; this new creation turns toward the connection between humanity and the divine.
By combining flamenco and Sufi devotional chants, the performance creates a space where spiritual traditions transcend centuries and continents. Accompanied by a specially assembled ensemble of singers and musicians, the unexpected affinities between two of the world’s most emotionally charged musical forms come together. The UK’s Abundant Art publication called Qawwali Flamenco a must-see “…emotionally charged and hypnotic experience — the raw power of qawwali intertwined with the duende of flamenco created something truly transcendent.”
