Experience the desert rock and protest music that forced this Malian singer, songwriter, and guitar virtuoso into exile. In this evocative concert, Ahmed Ag Kaedy goes back to the origins of Tuareg folk with stripped down, soul-stirring guitar that serves as a lament for his homeland.

Ag Kaedy, like many other Tuareg musicians, cannot return to war-ravaged Northern Mali. After extremist factions swept through his hometown, suppressing music and threatening to cut his fingers if he dared play the guitar again, Ag Kaedy fled and has since become an inspiration for a generation of artists using music to speak out for peace and freedom.

After the show, Ag Kaedy will sit down with Errol Nazareth, host of CBC’s Big City, Small World, for a conversation about Mali’s imperiled music scene. You can also learn more about Ag Kaedy's inspiring story in our free screening of the documentary Mali Blues on November 27.

This event is part of our 2019/20 Performing Arts season, Listening to Each Other, which pays tribute to the role of the performative arts in connecting communities, preserving culture, and spurring social change. It’s also part of our fall season —Africa! — which explores new dimensions of the vast and complex continent with a world-class lineup of art, performers, and speakers.
