Lapis Ball: In Ecstatic Motion

On Thursday, September 28, 2023, over 250 guests gathered at the Aga Khan Museum for Lapis Ball: In Ecstatic Motion.

A celebration of the enduring themes of Rumi’s poetry, the evening was brought to life through the visual arts, storytelling, and performances by Moe Clark, Saeed Kamjoo, and Mekaal Hasan Band.

Through the generous support of our sponsors and donors, the Museum raised over $1 million. These funds contribute to innovative exhibitions, educational programming for lifelong learners, and family friendly activities.

Moe Clark

Moe Clark
âpihtawikosisâniskwêw (Métis/Norwegian/French/British) multidisciplinary artist Moe Clark is a 2Spirit singing thunderbird. She works across diverse disciplines of vocal improvisation, spoken word poetry, sound design, and performance to create meaning that is rooted in personal legacy, ancestral memory, and embodied knowledge. Clark’s work has appeared the world over, including at the Lincoln Centre, UBUD Writers & Readers Festival in Bali, Indonesia and Origins Festival in London, England.

Clark has seven albums of music, both solo and collaborative. Her last solo album Within toured across North America and her collaborative video poem “nitahkôtân” won best Indigenous language music video at the ImagiNative film festival.

Clark’s work as a creative facilitator aims to remember and reconnect personal and collective belonging to territories of land, body, and voice. Through creative continuums of Indigenous language immersion, song creation and ceremonial practice, her work in community reinforces the roles of 2S people and intergenerational transmission.

Saeed Kamjoo

Saeed Kamjoo

Kamjoo's style of playing the kamanche, a traditional Persian instrument, is characterized by his creative and authentic approach while also incorporating innovative elements. He respects the traditional values of classical Persian music, but also allows himself to explore new musical territories.

He has performed in Europe, North and Central America, Eastern Asia, Palestine, and at Rumi's tomb in Konya, Turkey.

Mekaal Hasan Band

Mekaal Hasan Band
Mekaal Hasan is a Pakistani musician known for his recorded and live performances with the Mekaal Hasan Band and for his recording, audio mixing, and production abilities which have seen him work with leading contemporary local and international artists.

The unique Sufi rock band has played major stages in India, Pakistan, Europe, and North America and won praise from American, European, and subcontinental press.
