Forty years after her last performance in Toronto, the legendary vocalist Begum Parveen Sultana will make her only North American appearance at the Meridian Arts Centre. Co-presented by The Aga Khan Museum and Raag-Mala Music Society of Toronto, with support from TOLive, this unmissable off-site performance is a rare opportunity to enjoy the transformative melodies of an incredible Indian music icon.
With a voice spanning four octaves, Begum Parveen Sultana effortlessly mesmerizes with classical khayal, thumri, and bhajan alike. Renowned for hits like “Kaun Gali Gayo Shyam” and “Aan Milo Sajna,” she is a recipient of Padma Shree, Sangeet Natak Akademi, and Padma Bhushan awards. Sultana's artistry captivates audiences, cementing her status among India's finest artists.
Born into a musical Afghan family in Assam, Sultana began her training at five, blossoming under legends like Acharya Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri and Ustad Dilshad Khan. Her collaborations, notably with her husband, produce gems like the revered "Khayal Se Bhajan Tak," enriching the realm of Indian classical music.
Raag-Mala Toronto’s mission is to weave the thread of Indian Classical Music (ICM) into the Canadian cultural fabric. They were formed in 1981 with a mandate to promote and preserve ICM by presenting top Indian and North America-based artists in performance. Their secondary objective is to spread awareness and appreciation of ICM through lecture demonstrations and a strong online presence. Today, they are amongst the longest-serving organizations in North America that are focused on this genre, celebrating our 43rd year of uninterrupted programming in 2023.
The Museum’s Performing Arts programming is generously supported by the Nanji Family Foundation.
