Dir. Lulu Wang, 2019, comedy/drama, 1 hr 40 min, PG

Join us for a funny and poignant film about cultural identity and finding strength in family ties, starring Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Oceans 8). Based on a real-life lie, the film follows aspiring Chinese-American writer Billi as she reluctantly returns to China for an impromptu wedding that’s being staged as a way to say goodbye to her terminally ill grandmother — who hasn’t been told that she’s dying.

Though Billi disagrees with hiding the truth from her beloved grandmother, she nonetheless navigates the minefield of family expectations and ends up discovering that there is much to celebrate in the country she left as a child.

The Farewell is part of our 2019/20 season, Listening to Each Other, which pays tribute to the role of the performing arts in preserving culture, spurring social change, and celebrating diversity.
