This Family Day Weekend, celebrate the Lunar New Year at the Aga Khan Museum with exciting activities and performances presented in partnership with the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.

 

The Year of the Dragon brings us renewed energy, vitality and prosperity. Don't miss our special programming all weekend long! Enjoy free live performances, Calligraphy in the Atrium, and Family Activities, or get creative with the whole family at a free or paid workshop.

 

Enjoy free admission to the Museum Collections Gallery and $10 admission to the current temporary exhibition, Night in the Garden of Love.

Schedule and Workshop Information

 

Live Object Storytelling
FREE Daily | 11 am–1 pm and 2–5 pm

Step into the vibrant world of Islamic arts and get up close with objects and stories through our Live Object Storytelling sessions in the Museum Collections Gallery. Join the Museum's Educators as they bring objects from the Permanent Collection to life. 

 

Wearable Art: Tote Bag Design Workshop
$15* | 11 am–12 pm | Ages 12+

Unleash your inner artist and turn an ordinary tote bag into a unique, wearable masterpiece with patterns and decorations inspired by Museum objects.

Lion and Dragon Dance

Experience a traditional Lion Dance — a dance believed to drive away bad spirits and negative energies, as well as usher in good luck and prosperity for the New Year. This year, the lions will be accompanied by a dragon!

 

TD Pop-Up Performances
FREE Daily | 12:30 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm

Look and listen for TD Pop-up Performances by local artists in the Museum's Atrium.

 

Martial Arts Demonstration by the Wayland Li Wushu Centre

Ribbon Dance

Kelly Hof, Dance and Acting Gold Medalist and two-time overall division awards winner (2023) at the WCOPA (World Championships of Performing Arts), started dancing when she was four years old. Her solo dance "Impression of DunHuang Flying Apsaras" was selected from more than 40 countries to be performed in the finals in Los Angeles, California.

 

The Art and Science of Colour Making and Bookmark Decoration Workshop
$15* | 1:30 pm-2:30 pm | Ages 6+

Discover the art and science of colour making and witness the transformation of raw materials into vibrant colours. Visitors will engage in pigment grinding and mixing, transforming them into vibrant colours, which they will use to decorate a keepsake bookmark.

Toronto Chinese Orchestra
FREE Daily | 2:30 pm

The Toronto Chinese Orchestra (TCO), the longest-running Chinese orchestra in Canada, will perform pieces highlighting the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Chinese music. In the petting zoo session, you will have a chance to learn more about the instruments!

 

Clay Tile Making Workshop
$15* | 4–5 pm | Ages 6+

Get hands-on with clay and create your own unique tile in this interactive workshop. Learn about the materials, tools, and techniques, then design your own ceramic tile inspired by the Museum Collections.
