Experience the soul of flamenco with Lola! Gitanos de Jerez, a performance created by Mario Gonzales, that captures the essence of Jerez de la Frontera. Renowned for preserving the wildness and rawness of flamenco, Jerez is home to generations of flamenco dynasties, where the art form is passed down with unmatched purity. Lola! Gitanos de Jerez brings the captivating cante (song), toque (guitar), and baile (dance) that define Jerez’s rich cultural heritage to the Museum stage. Prepare to be spellbound by a performance that embodies the very identity of this historic city.

Mario Gonzalez was invited to program this evening’s performance of Lola! Gitanos de Jerez. Gonzalez is the owner and cultural manager of La Guarida del Angel, a 16th-century palace located in the heart of Jerez’s flamenco-rich San Miguel neighbourhood. With 25 years of rich history, this historic venue has evolved from an ancient synagogue, convent, and orphanage into a vibrant concert hall. Mario Gonzalez also founded the “Jerez Off Festival,” programming hundreds of flamenco performances and recitals that showcase Jerez’s flamenco schools. The venue hosts conferences offering unique insights into flamenco art and culture.

The Museum’s Performing Arts programming is generously supported by the Nanji Family Foundation.

Carmen Romero, the Artistic Director and Principal Dancer of Toronto’s Compañía Carmen Romero, serves as the guest co-curator for the 10th annual Duende Flamenco Festival, alongside Amirali Alibhai, Head of Performing Arts at the Aga Khan Museum and the Festival’s Artistic Director.
