NOLLYWOOD BABYLON
Ben Addelman and Samir Mallal, 2008, 75 min, rated E*

You know about Hollywood and Bollywood, but what about Nollywood? Documentary directors Ben Addelman and Samir Mallal go behind the scenes of the wildly popular Nigerian movie industry, now the world’s second largest. Here, enterprising filmmakers and unlikely stars make the most of shoe-string budgets to tell urban stories inspired by traditional magic and mystical voodoo traditions.

Nollywood Babylon is presented in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada for our fall season—Africa! — which explores new dimensions of the vast and complex continent with a world-class lineup of art, performers, and speakers. It’s also a part of our 2019/20 Performing Arts season, Listening to Each Other, which pays tribute to the role of performative arts in connecting communities, preserving culture, and spurring social change.
