Nanuk Narratives: A Special Screening for World Water Day
Price: Free with admission
Location: Bellerive Room
Hours: 11 am–5 pm
Water sustains life, shapes landscapes, and connects cultures. As part of our World Water Day programming, this special screening of Nanuk Narratives explores the deep relationship between Inuit communities and nanuk—the polar bear—across the Arctic. Through firsthand stories from Elders, hunters, and youth, the film highlights the resilience, knowledge, and traditions that have sustained Inuit for generations.
This documentary sheds light on the challenges of a changing Arctic, from shifting ecosystems to human-bear interactions, offering a window into the lived experiences of those who call the North home.
Presented in partnership with York University UNITAR Global Water Academy, and in collaboration with Cloudberry Connections, this screening underscores the power of storytelling in environmental awareness and cross-cultural dialogue.

About the UNITAR Global Water Academy
UNITAR’s Global Water Academy (UGWA) is a multi-stakeholder collaboration between academic institutions and private sector partners, with York University (Canada) as Academic Lead. The UGWA tackles diverse aspects of the water sustainability crisis through training, capacity-building, research, and knowledge mobilization, ultimately to inform decision-making and public policy.
York University, a top global institution recognized for its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, is the academic lead for the UNITAR Global Water Academy. Under the leadership of Professor Sapna Sharma, York mobilizes researchers and policy experts to advance water sustainability, train future leaders, and support equitable access to clean freshwater. With Ontario’s vast freshwater resources and ongoing water access challenges—particularly in remote and Indigenous communities — York emphasizes Indigenous knowledge systems and relationships with water, environmental governance, environmental justice, and sustainable development. Through cutting-edge research and capacity-building, York develops solutions for water quality, conservation, and management, addressing global water challenges with innovation and impact.
