Join Professor Marcus Milwright as he reveals fascinating stories embedded in the intricate designs, symbolic meanings, and even hidden mistakes in Islamic art, with insights into the lives of their creators and original audiences.

This IAMCC Annual Distinguished Lecture is presented in partnership with the Islamic Art & Material Culture Collaborative — a research network based in Toronto that brings together the capacities and resources of the University of Toronto (UofT), the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), and the Aga Khan Museum.

Beginning with an overview of the history of Islamic art collecting and scholarship in Canada from the late nineteenth century to the present day, this lecture then considers how the tools of narrative and storytelling can be used in academic and museum settings to explain the ways in which Islamic buildings, objects, and paintings communicated with their original audiences.

Highlighting a selection of objects, including works in the collections of the Aga Khan Museum and Royal Ontario Museum, Professor Milwright will explore the ways in which narratives can be generated from the examination of the material, aesthetic, and symbolic qualities of art. Objects can also preserve evidence of mistakes, changes of mind, and unexpected events, providing us with valuable glimpses into the lives of past makers and consumers.

This lecture will be followed by a reception and book signing of Professor Milwright’s publications A Story of Islamic Art (Routledge, 2023) and Made for the Eye of One Who Sees: Canadian Contributions to the Study of Islamic Art and Archaeology (McGill/Queens University Press, 2022). A limited number of copies will be available for sale at the Aga Khan Museum Shop.
