Marking a new chapter of the Labyrinth Ensemble and a milestone for the growth of modal music in Canada, the ensemble project returns with a whole new cohort. 14 musicians start their four-year journey dedicated to studying and performing the many manifestations of modal music. With new instruments, such as guzheng, Hardanger fiddle, qanun and microtonal guitar, each member of the group brings their own traditions to create a unique sound.
Joining the ensemble from Valencia, Spain, guest musician Efrén López imparts 30+ years of modal exploration on hurdy gurdy and a variety of lutes, digging into European Medieval, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Central Asian traditions.
