The Labyrinth Ensemble is a 14-person ensemble based in Toronto, Ontario, representing a variety of musical traditions and aesthetics within the world of modal music. The Ensemble engages in a multi-week rehearsal intensive with a specialized guest artist to learn music in its authenticity while collaborating in its presentation. The Ensemble is unique in the world in that it draws from each member’s musical lineage to create a hybrid yet faithful sound.

This performance marks the debut of a new cohort, who will dedicate the next four years to this project.

This performance features Alex Fournier, Araz Salek, Yosef Brailovesky, Behzad Danesh, Beth Silver, Elise Boeur, Joshua Greenberg, Naoko Tsujita, Naghmeh Farahmand, Saghi Farsijani, Sara Constant, Soheil Sadeghi, Yalda Ehsani, and Yang Chen.

Efrén López is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and sound engineer hailing from Valencia, Spain. For over 30 years, he has been involved in creative music projects on both ends of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Balkans, Asia, and the Medieval European traditions, with a specialization in hurdy gurdy and lutes.

Highlight collaborations include Ross Daly, Trio Petrakis/López/Chemirani, Kelly Thoma, Philarmonie de Paris, L’Ham de Foc, Stelios Petrakis, and Keyvan Chemirani, to name a few. Through these collaborations, he has participated in the recording of more than 120 albums and toured Europe, North Africa, North and South America, the Middle East, China and the Indian Subcontinent.

Additionally, he has performed for television and radio channels including  TVE-2, TV3, National Television of Puerto Rico, Greek Radio-Television ERT, BBC, WDR3 German Radio, Radio Television of Switzerland, and Burç FM.
