Journey across cultures and centuries in this evocative evening exploring the Persian santur and the Chinese yangqin — two kindred instruments shaped by distinct musical worlds.
Presented in two immersive sets, the program begins with the yangqin before moving into the rich traditions of the Persian santur, allowing each to unfold on its own terms. From China’s diverse regional soundscapes to the intricate modal systems of Persian classical music, the performance explores a vibrant blend of connection, evolution, and exchange.
Chinese Yangqin
Travel across China through the shimmering tones of the yangqin. Beginning in Guangdong, the music is gentle and lyrical, marked by refined phrasing and delicate melodies.
As the journey moves west toward Xinjiang, the sound transforms, growing more rhythmic, energetic, and expressive. Each piece captures a distinct regional voice, blending history, culture, and evolving musical traditions.
Persian Santoor
A cornerstone of Persian classical music, the santoor is prized for its delicate yet deeply expressive sound. Amir Amiri brings this tradition to life through the intricate framework of the dastgah system.
Joined by Elham Manoouchehri on tar and voice, the performance unfolds through nuanced melodic development and subtle rhythmic interplay — creating a richly textured and immersive musical experience.
