Step into a world of beauty and contrast with Your Way Begins on the Other Side, a mesmerizing tapestry that weaves together art, poetry, and spiritual reflection.

Returning to view in the Collections Gallery in celebration of the Museum’s 10th anniversary, Your Way Begins on the Other Side is a monumental tapestry by acclaimed Pakistani artist Aisha Khalid. This six-meter-long, double-sided work — acquired as the first contemporary artwork in the Aga Khan Museum’s Collections — draws inspiration from Persian garden design and Sufi poetry.

Intricately crafted with over one million gold-plated steel pins embedded in layers of silk and velvet, the tapestry offers a dual perspective. On one side, a garden is inhabited by wild beasts against a black velvet background, while the other side features shimmering waves of gold pins against red silk.

With a title inspired by a ghazal from the celebrated Persian mystical poet Rumi, Your Way Begins on the Other Side invites reflection on the paradoxes of beauty and pain, desire and restraint, and the journey toward spiritual enlightenment.
