Volunteer Opportunities

To be surrounded by amazing artworks and artifacts never ceases to enliven my day and would do so, I think, for anybody that may also be interested in volunteering at the Museum. I know it has changed my life. —Shirin Walani, Volunteer

At the Aga Khan Museum, there are many ways to get involved!

Whether assisting on the floor, leading tours, or supporting school groups and special events, our volunteers at the Aga Khan Museum play a key role in making the Museum a place for public engagement, inquiry and creativity. They are involved in every aspect of our operations and help bring the Museum to life each and every day.

Please find more information below regarding our volunteering opportunities. If you are interested in applying to become a volunteer, please fill out the volunteer application form at the bottom of the page and we will get back to you shortly after. For any additional questions, please contact the Volunteer Services Office at volunteer.admin@agakhanmuseum.org.

Below is a brief overview of our volunteering opportunities.

Guest Services

Our Guest Services volunteers represent the largest section of the Museum’s volunteer body. These volunteers engage and connect with visitors at various entry points in the Museum and throughout our spaces. Their primary responsibilities involve greeting visitors, assisting them with their questions, allowing access into the galleries and facilitating the safekeeping of coats and bags. We also have a specialized role of Information Ambassadors dedicated to providing updated information to our onsite visitors. Our Guest Services volunteers also assist during all of our performances and other events.

Gift Shop

Our Gift Shop volunteers are the first point of contact for our visitors. They welcome visitors to the Museum and the Shop and engage the visitor with their knowledge of the beautiful products of the Museum Shop. They assist the visitors in making selections and ensure that visitors leave the shop as satisfied customers.

Museum Educators

(Tour Guides, Family Program, and School Group Volunteers)

Education is a key area of the Museum and one which offers our volunteers many opportunities to share, inspire and impact adults and children alike. Our Educator volunteers engage with the participants of our educational programs as required, including conducting tours of the exhibitions, the architecture, and the Park, and by supporting the Museum Educators in classrooms during visits of school groups or planned family activities.

Administration and Special Project Volunteers

At the Aga Khan Museum, we try our best to match our volunteers’ skills with various administrative tasks or special projects. As such, we regularly have short-term and long-term project related positions available within our Administration Offices that volunteers are welcome to support with. Depending on the nature of the project, volunteers may also be able to support remotely.

Remote Volunteers

These are volunteers who support Museum activities, working remotely. With the many changes that occurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic, staff at the Aga Khan Museum were able to develop a virtual platform for the public which facilitates opportunities for more and more volunteers to support in a remote capacity and develop their skills by working in a virtual environment. Our opportunities for remote volunteers are diverse and expanding each day, and we look forward to welcoming those that are interested in this area.

Other Support

As our Museum grows, we are always looking for ways in which our volunteers can contribute to creating a wonderful experience for our visitors. There are a variety of opportunities available to current volunteers that allow them to try new skills, meet new people, and experience our art and culture in exciting ways. Such opportunities include, but are not limited to, volunteering in setting up and supporting our regular TD Pop Up performances and in welcoming Patrons in our Rupani Family Patron’s Lounge.
