Purpose of Position
Reporting to the Director, Development, the Development Officer, Grants & Foundations is responsible for building and managing the Museum’s portfolio of corporate, foundation, and government grants programs. They are responsible for identifying, engaging, soliciting, and stewarding local and national sources of support from corporations, charitable foundations, and government organizations. This includes researching and preparing proposals and applications for support, as well as cultivating relationships with key stakeholders. They are also responsible for the preparation of stewardship and impact reports, as well as tracking proposals, applications, and working closely with other members of the Museum’s Development, Programming, and Education teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively managing an institutional giving portfolio, including solicitation and stewardship responsibilities.
- Identifying and researching a pipeline of charitable foundations and government granting programs to provide support for the Museum’s programmatic areas, key funding priorities, and operations.
- Preparing and writing letters of intent, proposals, and applications for local, national and international corporations, charitable foundations, and government granting agencies.
- Helping to research and build the Museum’s institutional giving stewardship program, including defining corporate and sponsor benefits.
- Collaborating cross-functionally with key members of the Museum’s programming teams to write and develop content for applications and proposals.
- Preparing progress, impact, and stewardship reports for funders.
- Ensuring timely stewardship, including the delivery of benefits and recognition to the stakeholder portfolio.
- Supporting the Development team to research and prepare proposals, presentations, and impact reports.
- Providing professional, high-quality relationship management to sponsors, donors, patrons, volunteers, staff, and other community contacts.
- Developing and maintaining a calendar of application deadlines and reporting
- Using the donor database (Tessitura) to track and record funding prospects and
- Maintaining a central repository of program-related content, updating it on an ongoing basis, and making it available for use by the rest of the department as base informational material.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum of a university degree, preferably in Business, English, the Arts, or Creative Writing.
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience, preferably in arts and culture in the not-for-profit sector.
- Proven track record in developing and maintaining a portfolio of corporate sponsors, foundations, and grant programs.
- Strong written and presentation skills, including translating organizational priorities into inspiring, compelling, and dynamic philanthropic opportunities.
- Experience in identifying, researching, cultivating, and soliciting prospects.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively within a cross-functional team, on projects and team priorities.
- Solid interpersonal and relationship management skills.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to multitask with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Experience with donor databases, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Technical ability and willingness to learn new systems as required for the role.
- Ability to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends for events and meetings.
- Ability and willingness to work on-site and online as required by the Museum.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and respect for diverse populations.
- Knowledge and passion for arts and culture is an asset.
The salary range for this position is $60,000–$68,000, commensurate with experience.
