The Tessellations of Bach: Afraaz Mulji

“The Tessellations of Bach” delves into the convergence of Glenn Gould’s masterful interpretation of the Goldberg Variations and Afraaz Adam Mulji’s profound comprehension of Johann Sebastian Bach, viewed through the dual prisms of a composer and a practitioner of both the tabla and the organ. The tabla, an instrument of rhythmic complexity, will be employed to unveil the melodic and harmonic concordances inherent in Bach’s compositions, simultaneously accentuating the cultural valorization of counterpoint shared by both traditions. While Indian music is distinguished by its intricate rhythmic and melodic counterpoint, Bach’s oeuvre epitomizes harmonic counterpoint. This confluence of disparate yet analogous musical contexts will orchestrate an immersive experience, characterized by cultural ekphrasis, synthesis, and symbiosis, transcending conventional auditory perceptions.
