He began his training at the age of five under his father, the late Ustad Mumtaz Hussain, a renowned vocalist. He later studied with tabla masters Ustad Faiyaz Khan of the Delhi Gharana, the late Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan of the Punjab Gharana, and finally, the legendary Ustad Allah Rakha Khan.

Over the years, Shahbaz has accompanied some of the greatest names in Indian and Pakistani classical music, including Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Rais Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, and ghazal legend Ghulam Ali.

He has performed extensively across Europe, North America, and Asia, gracing prestigious venues such as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Lincoln Center in New York, and Royal Albert Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. In addition to his performances, he is a dedicated educator, teaching tabla in the UK at the University of Newcastle and the University of Huddersfield.
