Jonathan Kay

Jonathan Kay, Ph.D., is a Grammy winning and Juno nominated multi-instrumentalist from Toronto, Canada. After graduating from Humber College with Honours in Jazz Studies (saxophone), he studied North Indian Raga in Kolkata and Japanese shakuhachi in Kyoto. Integrating these contemplative traditions with experimental improvisation, he developed a distinctive voice in contemporary music. From 2008–2018, he lived in Kolkata, studying Raga through voice, saxophone, and esraj, and created the shrutiphone, a customized saxophone tuned for Raga. He is among the first to perform full solo Raga on saxophone at a professional level in India. In Canada, he has cultivated transcultural music as leader of several ensembles, performing internationally across Canada, India, USA, and Japan.
